Optimal monetary policy rules in a two-country economy with a zero bound on nominal interest rates

چکیده

This paper investigates optimal monetary policy rules when two large countries simultaneously face non-negativity constraints on nominal interest rates. Under policy coordination, domestic optimal monetary policy rules depend on domestic endogenous variables, foreign inflation, and domestic and foreign policy rates when the zero lower bound is never binding. Such policy rules generally lose the optimality once both countries face the zero bound simultaneously. We demonstrate that even in such a situation the domestic central bank can obtain an optimal interest rate rule that retains the history dependence from endogenous variables such as inflation and the output gap of both countries. © 2012 Elsevier Inc. Monetary and Macro-prudential Policies: An Integrated Analysis

This paper studies the interaction between monetary and macro-prudential policies in a simple model with both nominal and financial frictions. The nominal friction gives rise to a conventional monetary policy objective emphasized in the New Keynesian literature. The financial friction, in the form of an occasionally binding collateral constraint, gives rise to a financial stability objective. ...

Optimal Monetary Policy under Discretion with a Zero Bound on Nominal Interest Rates

We determine optimal discretionary monetary policy in a New-Keynesian model when nominal interest rates are bounded below by zero. Nominal interest rates should be lowered faster in response to adverse shocks than in the case without bound. Such ‘preemptive easing’ is optimal because expectations of a possibly binding bound in the future amplify the e ects of adverse shocks. Calibrating the mod...

Output Gaps and Robust Monetary Policy Rules ∗ Roberto

Policymakers often use the output gap, a noisy signal of economic activity, as a guide for setting monetary policy. Noise in the data argues for policy caution. At the same time, the zero bound on nominal interest rates constrains the central bank’s ability to stimulate the economy during downturns. In such an environment, greater policy stimulus may be needed to stabilize the economy. Thus, no...

Rule-based of Monetary Policy in Iran Inspired by McCallum Rule

Economists have reached a consensus that an independent central bank could improve its policy efficiency by following a monetary policy rule. One of the important rules is McCallum rule where that requires central banks to target the growth rate of nominal GDP using the monetary base as its instrument. One of the features of the McCallum rule uses the monetary base rather than the interest rate...
